Orthopedic Shoulder Replacement is a procedure where the entire shoulder joint it replaced with a new ball and socket shoulder joint, it is a complex procedure and requires advanced surgical skills and expertise to achieve a good, near complete native shoulder function without complication.

Shoulder replacement are categorised as primary shoulder replacement, which means the patient undergoes shoulder replacement surgery for the first time. This can be of two type -

Anatomical shoulder replacement

Reverse Shoulder replacement

Or Revision shoulder replacement, which means the replaced shoulder joint is not functioning as it should and requires changing again. This may be required for many reasons.

Anatomical Total Shoulder Replacement

In shoulder replacement surgery, the damaged parts of the shoulder are removed and replaced with artificial components, called a prosthesis.

In anatomical shoulder replacement , the head of the humerus bone (ball) and the socket (glenoid) both are replaced with artificial components. The shoulder moves and functions nearly as the normal shoulder but does require all the muscles around shoulder to function optimally to move the joint.

The surgeon needs to assess the shoulder in detail before consideration of anatomical total shoulder replacement.

Dr Tawari undertakes Anatomical Shoulder replacement with very advanced, smaller and bone preserving prosthesis as opposed to the older longer prosthesis. The outcome from total shoulder replacements are excellent, and generally patients are very happy and live a productive normal life with optimal use of their replaced shoulder.

Another type of shoulder replacement is called reverse total shoulder replacement.

A Reverse total shoulder replacement is used for people who have severe arm weakness or have severe arthritis and rotator cuff tearing. In these cases an anatomical (conventional) total shoulder replacement can still leave them with pain.

They may also be unable to lift their arm up past a 90-degree angle and this can be severely debilitating.

Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement

In reverse total shoulder replacement, the socket and metal ball are switched. That means a metal ball is attached to the socket bone (glenoid) and a plastic socket is attached to the humerus head (ball).

This allows the patient to use the deltoid muscle instead of the torn rotator cuff to lift the arm.

The surgeon needs to assess the shoulder in detail before consideration of reverse total shoulder replacement.

Dr Tawari undertakes Reverse total Shoulder replacement with extreme precision & very advanced techniques. The outcome from a reverse total shoulder replacements are excellent, and generally patients are very happy and live a productive normal life with optimal use of their replaced shoulder.

Revision Total Shoulder Replacement Surgery

Revision replacement surgery is an uncommon surgical procedure. As the name suggests, it is undertaking a shoulder replacement surgery in patients who have had a previous surgery on their shoulder and the results are not satisfactory or they have had a complication of the previous surgery.

Revision Shoulder surgery, requires advanced skills and training, to ensure a satisfactory outcome is obtained for the patient.
